GAME DESIGNER & PROGRAMMER PORTFOLIO

Maxwell Beeson is a passionate game designer and programmer based in Reading, UK. With a focus on game development, video editing, and Esports, I aim to bring the mechanics dreamt of by game designers into the immersive world of each game I work on.

SIMULATION WITH RTS FEATURES

Medieval Castle Manager

Final Project for Interactive Media BSc

Medieval Castle Manager is my biggest piece. It is a simulator-style game which implements RTS-style complex mechanics alongside semi-realistic graphics in order to immerse the player in the game, and create more difficulty for the player than the average simulator.

In this project, I undertook all sides of development, including market research, game design, 2d asset design, 3d asset repurposing/editing, programming and level design.

HISTORICAL CARD GAME

image_2025-05-14_222913026.png

Group Project

EraQuest: Historic Figures is a card game in which players must assign their historical figures cards to pseudo-randomly ordered events in order to progress. Each historical figure has stats associated with them, which were assigned through combination of the use of AI and the votes of the groups, in order to minimise bias.

In this project, I took the role of Technical Lead, meaning I took on all of the programming work and learned to delegate smaller portions to other programmers. I also had a large part in the project's direction and balancing, using my knowledge of other card games and competitive games in order to create a scaling difficulty curve.

VR Horror Experience

Astrophobia

Independent Project

Astrophobia is a VR-horror-experience in which the user can traverse through an abandoned spaceship. Small jump-scares and a focus of world-building are what this project uses to create an atmosphere of fear for the player.

In this project, I once again took on all roles, but decided to focus heavily on the world building in order to create enough immersion for the project to be successful as a horror experience.

I used this project to experiment with lighting, animation and SteamVR. I believe my interest in horror games to be a key factor in the success of this game's environment.
